Leah is an Associate Investigator at the Centre, providing consultation and advice in relation to the project on the ‘Everyday digital experiences of Australian families from migrant backgrounds’. She hopes to be able to ensure that the experiences and perspectives of migrant families are included in the Centre’s research, creating more inclusive digital futures for children in Australia.

Leah’s doctoral research explored migrant mothers’ use of online communities. Her first book, Migrant Mothers in the Digital Age (Routledge, 2021) won the TASA Raewyn Connell Prize for Best First Book by an author in Australian Sociology. Leah was recently been awarded an ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Fellowship for her project investigating how migrant healthcare workers’ family relationships and care networks affect their migration decisions, experiences of the workplace and plans for the future.

First digital memory

Playing “Granny’s Garden” – an educational adventure game that introduced many British schoolchildren to computers – on a computer at my mum’s school during the summer holidays while she prepared her classroom for the new year. It taught me to value the invisible work done by teachers(!) and that the route to progress includes many failures and incremental learning.
