Professor Matt Bellgard’s research expertise includes digital health, human/animal/plant genomics, bioinformatics, health informatics, AI, biosecurity, eResearch, HASS, remote sensing and radio astronomy. Matt has led the design and development of digital health solutions for government, industry and academia, addressing policy, data governance, privacy, and consent issues across multiple jurisdictions. He was a prior member of the ARC College of Experts. More recently, Professor Bellgard has taken an interest in learning analytics and how digital health approaches might be leveraged in an education-centric context. Matt will lend his extensive knowledge in eResearch and complex data management to the Longitudinal Family Study, guiding the development of data infrastructure to support the study.

Matt has attracted over $45m in research funding, was co-inventor of 5 full/20 provisional patents, designed and commissioned a world’s top 100 supercomputer, and co-authored over 156 peer reviewed articles. He is a Board member of the APEC Life Science Innovation Forum Executive Board and Chair of the APEC LSIF Rare Disease Network. Matt is the inaugural Director of eResearch at QUT, where he works closely with researchers and external end-users to devise innovative strategies to ensure technological solutions are fit-for-purpose and best-of-breed.
