Professor Kristiina Kumpulainen’s research expertise is in the fields of digital mediation of children’s interactions, digital and maker contexts to support learning of young children, and play-based pedagogies and media-based education. Kristiina will contribute to the Educated Child program, providing support to the Centre’s research on children’s online engagement with virtual materials. She will also work on projects related to digital and print tools and their use in maker activities, as well as investigating the conceptualisation of ‘play’ as an education context.
Kristiina is widely published in the field, authoring or contributing to nearly 200 papers and chapters. Recent publications include co-authoring a paper on global perspectives on children’s digital opportunities and a chapter in Maker literacies and maker identities in the digital age : Learning and playing through modes and media on the sociomaterial ecology of emotions in students’ engagement within a school’s makerspace. Kristiina is the founding member and research director of the Playful Learning Centre and co-leader of the Learning, Culture and Interventions Expert Group.
