First-time parents’ plans for the digital lives of their preschool child

About the project

This project investigates Australian first-time parents’ plans for their preschool child’s (aged 0-4) engagement with digital media.

Research suggests many parents of young children are making decisions about their children’s digital media engagement on an ad- hoc basis. However, some parents regret not having had a clear trajectory around media use and skill development as their child develops unanticipated digital habits and dispositions.

This project explores first-time parents’ attitudes to children’s participation rights and investigates the reciprocal nature of how parents plan to embed digital engagement in their child’s life and how children respond to this mediation.

This project will produce outputs that discuss Australian first-time parents’ plans for their preschool child’s (aged 0-4) engagement with digital media.

Project aims:

  • Explore first-time parents’ attitudes to children’s participation rights regarding digital media
