Australian families’ perspectives and practices regarding young children’s data privacy in the home environment

About the project

The home is a key place for children’s earliest digital engagements, and where their first digital footprints emerge. To expand on the insights from the ACODA survey, this study aims to provide a clear picture of the data-privacy-related perspectives and practices of Australian families with young children.

Project Aims

  • Examine the data-privacy-related perspectives and practices of Australian families with young children
  • Examine the associated data management practices in the home environment
  • Examine alignment between participating families’ perspectives and practices related to children’s data privacy, and any current or future government policies on this issue
  • Provide evidence for the development of guidelines for parents and carers of young children, to support improved data privacy practices for families

Project Design

This study will collect data across three phases, but participants do not need to complete all three phases to join this study. Participants can choose to complete Phase 1 (survey) only, or they can express interest in participating in Phase 2 and/or Phase 3, after completing the survey.

  • Phase 1 involves a short online survey, completed by a parent or guardian of a current ACODA family.
  • Phase 2 involves an online interview of 30-45 minutes with the same parent or guardian.
  • Phase 3 involves a home visit with the ACODA family, to better understand how data privacy is managed in the space of the home. The home visit will take between 1hr -1.5 hrs, and (where possible) include the perspectives of the child(ren) in the home.

Phase 1 (survey) participants will enter a draw for a $250 gift card as a thank you for their time.

Phase 2 participants (online interview) will receive an additional $50 gift card as compensation for their time.

Phase 3 participants (home visits) will receive a $50 gift card, and another $50 gift card for their child(ren) if they participate as well.
