Associations between children’s outdoor time, technology use, and development outcomes

About the project

The aim of this study is to investigate the association between children’s technology use, time spent outdoors, self-regulation and mental health.

Several recent meta-analyses have found significant negative associations between digital technology use and developmental outcomes in young children. In particular, young children’s socio-emotional competence and their ability to self-regulate appeared to be poorer as screen use increased. Outdoor time has been found to have multi-faceted positive benefits for children and adults and may act as a moderator in the relationship between screen use and developmental outcomes in children.
